Eat Your Nuts- Better Health Outcomes
In the largest study of it’s kind, the New England Journal of Medicine study reports that those who ate a handful of nuts a day were 20% less likely to die from any cause over a period of 30 years than those who didn’t consume any nuts. Those eating nuts were thinner, had less heart disease and less cancer.
Previous studies on nut consumption have shown less chronic disease, less oxidative stress, less inflammation, obesity, hyperglycemia, insulin resistance and a reduction in risk for diabetes, metabolic syndrome, colon cancer, hypertension, gallstones, diverticulitis, and inflammatory diseases.
This study looked at data from 121,000 female nurses in 11 US states enrolled in 1976 and 51,529 male health professionals from all 50 states enrolled in 1986. Those eating nuts less than once a week reduced mortality by 7%, once a week reduced mortality 11%, 2-4 times a week reduced mortality 13%, 5-6 times a week resulted in 15% reduction, and there was a 20% reduced mortality for eating nuts at least daily.
In light of the growing evidence of health dangers from eating wheat, we should change our mantra from daily bread to daily nuts.
