Parents! Collect Those Cell Phones Before Bed and Watch Your Teenager’s School Performance Improve

TeenOnPhoneWhen my house was full with eight children, most of them teenagers, most with cell phones, it was obvious that cell phone use after typical bed time hours was contributing to daytime fatigue and suspected poor school performance. With my daughter who simply couldn’t unplug from socializing, we collected her phone before bed.  I learned years later, that she would do chores for her older brothers to get access to their phones!

The study Effects of Instant Messaging on School Performance in Adolescents found that students with the most cell phone use after lights out reported the least sleep duration, a higher rate of daytime sleepiness, and poorer academic performance.

The solution is simple. Have a family policy that all phones and smart anything (Ipads, laptops, etc.) are turned in for overnight charging to a location like the parents bedroom!

Training your child and your family in general to unplug from this constant need for connectedness will improve more than just sleep and academic performance. You might even find that your teenager comes and says good night and tucks you in at night!

Autism-Intensive-AllJanuary 10-18: The Autism Intensive

Why the Autism Intensive Summit?

Autism spectrum disorders are the fastest growing developmental disorder in the world today.

In the United States a child is diagnosed every 11 minutes. For the past three decades the rates have increased at an accelerating rate and are currently 1in 68 children; 1 in 48 boys and 1 in 189 girls are affected.

This is the first online Autism Summit. The compilation of experts across multiple disciplines with cutting edge and innovative therapies make this summit unique, with a comprehensive, inclusive, credible approach to a much-debated issue.

Learn from video interviews with Functional  Medicine visionaries and innovators that are experts in root cause resolution.

Autism spectrum disorders are a complex chronic condition with a large variation in symptoms. The cause remains elusive. A series of scientific studies over the last decade document that the increase is a real and cannot be attributed to better diagnosis.

There is a need to think deeply and objectively about this disorder. We know that multiple body systems are impacted, including: brain, nervous, immune, gastrointestinal, oxidation/reduction, inflammation, and mitochondria

We have assembled an outstanding group of doctors, parents, clinicians, chiropractors, nutritionists, and researchers that can shed light on this complex chronic condition. Our experts discuss the environmental connection and share with you cutting edge information about what you can do to improve the health and well being of your child.

Learn the latest, most up to date information about autism spectrum disorders, including ADHD. Discover how early intervention and treatment, and life-long support can make a difference for individuals with autism and their families.

The real answers are likely not being offered by mainstream medicine. We have traveled the country to interview 35 respected and trustworthy practitioners. It can often seem like there’s no options and no one else to turn to, The Autism Intensive Summit will help you get to the root of dysfunction in you child by giving you information you need to address:

  • Diet, nutrition, supplements, neutraceuticals, pharmaceutical, helminth therapy, essential oils
  • Healing the leaky gut
  • How to detoxify/eliminate heavy metals and environmental pollutants in food, air and water.
  • Treating chronic infections.
  • Hear from parents how they have been able to make dramatic positive changes in their children.
  • Understand biochemical and physiological basis for efficacy of biomedical interventions
  • How to begin a comprehensive approach
  • Body oriented therapies

There are many reasons why we seeing an alarming increase in autism spectrum disorder, by sharing this information we can do something about it! Collectively we know enough to prevent and remediate autism spectrum disorders.

Treating Menopause Does Not Increase Your Risk of Death (Endocrine Society Reviews the Literature)

hotflashesMany peri-menopausal and menopausal women suffer significant symptoms related to the loss of estrogen and progesterone (and, to a lesser extent, testosterone) that occurs in midlife.  Menopause symptoms can include hot flashes and sweats, fatigue, mental fog, hair thinning, vaginal dryness, loss of libido, leg cramps, headaches, osteoporosis, heart disease, mood swings,  and sleep problems for starters.   After the scare of the reports that came from the WHI study (which you can find here… ) many women abandoned hormone replacement therapy and now suffer.  Sadly the suffering is just the tip of the iceberg.  Untreated menopause puts women at risk for heart disease, cancer, and osteoporosis.

The good news is that even the mainstream endocrine society has just announced a comprehensive research review and concluded “menopausal hormone therapy does not affect the risk of dying”. You can read this review for yourself here…  This meta-analysis of 43 studies where menopausal women over 50 were randomized to placebo or hormone therapy (HT), found no statistical difference between HT and placebo for all-cause mortality (be it death from heart attack, breast cancer, or stroke).

Most, if not all these studies, used synthetic pharmaceuticals for hormone therapy.  Numerous past studies have shown improved health outcomes for those who use natural bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. (Read more here… ) There remains much controversy in the mainstream literature about bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. You should consult with a physician or medical provider with knowledge and experience in this area, and I do not recommend you undertake this on your own without proper monitoring.

The good news is that you can and should consider hormone replacement therapy if you are menopausal.  My vote is that you use bio-identical hormones with careful monitoring.  Most Naturopaths are very skilled in this area as are many Integrative Medicine MD’s.

GABA Receptor Polymorphism Associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Abstract red atom (done in 3d, isolated)

Abstract red atom (done in 3d, isolated)

GABA is the main calming neurotransmitter in the brain. Those with autism, ASD, and indeed ADHD and anxiety might be expected to have issues with the GABA receptor. The study, “Association between GABA(A) receptor subunit polymorphisms and autism spectrum disorder (ASD)”, found:

  • Significant differences in allele freq. (ASD patients versus controls): rs1912960 GABRA4.
  • Significant differences in genotype freq. (ASD patients versus controls): rs1912960 GABRA4.
  • Haplotypes: markers rs1912960 (GABRA4) and rs211037 (GABRG2) overrepresented in ASD.
  • GABRA4 involved in etiology of ASD in Argentinean sample independently or with GABRG2.

You can read this study for yourself by clicking here…

As the hundreds of thousands or millions of polymorphisms are identified and associations are found, we will gradually learn more and more about what makes each of us more vulnerable to various disorders and diseases. These same polymorphisms may offer strengths that allow us to survive better under various stresses. The key to ongoing health and wellness will be determining which environmental stresses are most dangerous for which individuals. Someone who cannot handle a particular stress might be guided to avoid certain careers which have high exposures to which they genetically are vulnerable.

Some polymorphisms might make you more vulnerable to vaccine damage. We know that those with autism (ASD) are more likely to have the SNP MTHFR. The study, “Association of MTHFR Gene Variants with Autism,” showed, “increased frequency of the homozygous mutation 677CT allele (TT): 23% in the autistic children compared to 11% in the control population (P<0.0001).” You can read that study here…  When you have this defect, you cannot methylate folate to the vital methyl-folate making your ability to methylate (turn on and off genes) and your ability to get rid of toxins, impaired. These are children who would not do well with toxin containing vaccines for example.  If the researchers would look at these aspects, we could selectively shield those vulnerable to vaccine damage from getting certain vaccines, for example. We are still in the early stages of identifying polymorphisms. Determining their meaning and what we choose to study will determine whether or not this huge data base will lead to better health or just more drugs.
