Breast Feed Longer For Better IQ and Future Income For Your Child (study)

BreastfeedingRocksThe study, “Association between breast feeding and intelligence, educational attainment, and income at 30 years of age: a prospective birth cohort study from Brazil,” (which you can read here… ) found that those who were breast fed for at least a year when compared to those who breast fed for a month or less, had:

  • 4 point higher IQ
  • 1 year more college
  • Income higher by 1/3 of the average income

The study looked at several thousand babies followed for 30 years in Brazil.  It is thought that the benefits of breast feeding were due to the DHA in the breast milk (that was lacking back then in formula).  I would say it is safe to say that cows milk is for calves, and that breast milk is best if at all possible.  For those moms who cannot breast feed, thankfully the formulas these days are DHA fortified, and there are some reasonably good options.

For my review of formulas, see by previous blog on this here…
