Natural Control Measures for Bed Bugs- What Works?

Bed BugBed bugs are becoming an increasing concern when you travel and stay at hotels and motels.  If you may have brought bed bugs home and want to treat your mattress, or if you want to treat the mattress where you are going, what products can you use?  Are there any natural (non-pesticide) products that work?

The study published in Journal of Economic Entomology “Potential of Essential Oil-based Pesticides and Detergents for Bed Bug Control” gives some guidance. You can read the study here…

Of the natural and non-synthetic essential oil based pesticides, only two- EcoRaider (1% geraniol, 1% cedar extract, and 2% sodium lauryl sulfate) and Bed Bug Patrol (0.003% clove oil, 1% peppermint oil, and 1.3% sodium lauryl sulfate) – killed more than 90 percent of the bed bugs.  Only EcoRaider, killed bed bug eggs (87 percent of them).  Below is a list of the natural (non-pesticide) products tested (I have put ecoraider in bold as it seems to be superior in this trial).

  • Bed Bug 911
  • Bed Bug Bully
  • Bed Bug Fix
  • Bed Bug Patrol
  • Ecoexempt IC2
  • EcoRaider
  • Eradicator
  • Essentria
  • Rest Assured
  • Green Rest Easy
  • Stop Bugging Me

I haven’t worried about bed bugs when I travel, and I’m not suggesting you should either.  If, however, you wanted to use a natural product, this study would suggest  that there is one that is superior: EcoRaider
