Bipolar Rates in the USA Reaching 1 in Every 1000, Compared With 1 in Every 100,000 in The UK
Recently published in the June 2014 issue of The Journal of American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, a study reports that pediatric bipolar disease (PBP) was 72 times higher in the US compared to that in England from 2000-2010. Results of this study found rates of PBD in the US of 100.9 per 100,000 and 1.4 per 100,000 in England. Controlling for cross-national differences, the rate was still 12.5 times higher in the US. For all childhood psychiatric diagnoses, the rate was 3.9 times higher. For adults, it was 7.2 times higher in the US than the UK.
Why, you might ask?
The article attempts to explain this away by proposing different diagnosis skills and approaches. While that may be part of the issue, I would propose that Europe has much tighter regulations on toxins and endocrine disruptors, known to affect mental health. Recall that Autism rates in Norway were 1/10th of the US rates. You can read that article here…
A very important study was published in JAMA Feb 13th 2013, titled “Association Between Maternal Use of Folic Acid Supplements and Risk of Autism Spectrum Disorders in Children”. Researchers studied over 85,000 pregnancies (in Norway) between 2002-2008, and followed the child’s health for an average of 6 years after birth, What they found was that for those moms who took folate during pregnancy, the autism rate was 1 in 1000, and if they didn’t take folate it was 1 in 500. Guess what the autism rate was in the USA for this same time period? 1 in 100!

Parents, what can you do? It is never too late to start making meaningful changes in your family’s life-style. Do everything you can to reduce the exposure to toxins. The number one hit is what happens in the womb. If you are pregnant, you are the vessel for your baby. You ARE the environment! Reduce stress and watch what you put in your body. The food you eat (organic please), the water that you drink (filtered please), and drugs, not to mention vaccines (the Tdap has 170-330 micrograms of aluminum- should be refused) should be diligently thought out. The next big hit is vaccines in the first year of life. Minimize toxins where you can. Giving the hepatitis B vaccine to a newborn when birth mom does not have Hepatitis B would be like taking chemotherapy for a cancer you don’t have- WORTHLESS, and worse yet, TOXIC! The hepatitis B vaccine has 250 micrograms of aluminum and the adult daily maximum is 50 micrograms. Hepatitis B vaccine given in the first 6 months of life, as done in the USA, is not providing lasting immunity.

The first two years of life are perhaps the most important of all. Breastfeed as long as possible and feed your baby organic foods only.
