Moms, Eat Your Nuts (peanuts and tree nuts) While Pregnant to Reduce Allergies in Your Child
In the past, we advised waiting to eat nuts until age 3 and avoiding them during pregnancy. That information was incorrect! Allergies to peanuts and tree nuts have tripled from 0.4% in 1997 to 1.4% in 2010. Several studies have now shown that moms who avoid peanuts actually put their kids at greater risk for allergies and this study confirms this. Other studies have also now shown that earlier introduction of allergenic foods in an infants diet may decrease sensitization and increase tolerance for these foods.
Take home message: moms, don’t limit your intake of nuts or other allergenic foods unless you yourself are allergic to them. I would also add that you can start almost any foods after 4-5 months age. Continue breast feeding if you can as this also reduces allergies and take your probiotics. We have a great probiotics in our office. HMF Natogen has been shown to reduce allergies in infants when started in the last trimester of pregnancy and continued at birth and the first months of life.
