Should You Try a Vaginal Delivery if Your First Baby Was Born By C-Section?
Just published in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, November 2013, “Vaginal birth after caesarian section: a cohort study investigating factors associated with its uptake and success”.
This study looked at 143,970 women who delivered their first baby by C-section between 2004 and 2011. 75,086 (52%) tried a VBAC (Vaginal birth after C-section) for their second birth. Two thirds (63%) were successful having a vaginal delivery of their second child. Younger moms tended to have better success.
Our first child was a C-section. We were blessed to have an OB-GYN who encouraged the VBAC attempt that was successful, with our second and third children. While this is a personal decision between a mom and her health care provider, this study is large enough to encourage those of you wanting to try the vaginal birth after C-section to go for it!
