Pregnancy, Vomiting (Hyperemesis Gravidarum), and Antihistamines- Don’t Take Them!

pregoYou are pregnant and you just can’t stop vomiting.  What should you do?  What shouldn’t you do?

Since I’m not an OB/GYN, I will say this:

Do call your OB/GYN or other healthcare provider to get advice. There are medications that can be used safely to stop your vomiting.

Do NOT take:

Benadryl (diphenhydramine)
Hydroxyzine (Visteril/Atarax)
Dimenhydrinate (Gravol)
Doxylamine (Unisom, Diclectin)
Pyridoxine (Bendectin)
Methyprednisolone (steroids)

Avoid all antihistamines as it seems they are effective in less than 20% and over 50% of those that took them had adverse outcomes.

Acupuncture, acupressure, and massage have been associated with positive outcomes.
