Flame Retardants Lower IQ and Cause Hyperactivity
Flame retardants (sadly in all of our mattresses and furniture) are now known to cause brain damage with lowered IQ and hyperactivity being found in children of mothers who were exposed while pregnant. Standards for flame retardants were so strict in California until recent changes, that the older foam pads were extremely toxic. Brand new furniture and mattresses tend to off-gas the most, and the oldest pads that are breaking down may also be especially bad.
With so many things to worry about, what do you do as a parent or parent to be? If you have the choice to avoid PBDE’s (Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers) then please do so, especially while pregnant and for our newborns, infants, and toddlers who may be more vulnerable.
