Herpes at Time of Delivery

stork_boyWhile herpes is relatively common (think cold sores), active herpes lesions in the genital area at the time of delivery are thankfully rare.  This article guides the management options in those cases where a mom is delivering a baby and unfortunately happens to have active herpes lesions at the time of delivery. Since herpes infections to a newborn can be extremely serious, please moms, tell your delivering provider and your pediatrician or babies provider that you have active herpes at the time or near the time of delivery so appropriate measures can be taken to minimize the risk to your newborn.  If this happens to be your first ever herpes infection in the genital area, it is extremely high risk to your newborn and very important that the newborn gets prompt care, even if they seem well.
